I am thinking of joining LA Fitness.  They appear to be more affordable than the YmCA and Lifetime (both of which I have belonged to).  But I don't know anyone who is a member at LA.   I do have an appointment there tomorrow evening to see the facility, look at scheduled classes, personal training options, equipment, etc....

Anyone have feedback?

You should be able to try it out for a couple of days (up to a week). I recieved a membership for a little over a week from a business associate. It was fantastic to go to the gym and check it out.

One problem for me was that the facility that I went to in Hopkins didn't have great childcare hours (a must for me) and only a limited amount of classes during the time of day that I would most likely attend. Therefore, it wouldn't really work for me.

However, if you try it out for a little while, it should help in your decision making.

PLEASE let me know what you think of LA Fitness! I would suggest finding out about any possible fees to attend classes, use lockers, pool, etc. Sometimes clubs have a low membership and nickel & dime you when you get in. Also, find out if their membership rate is effective for a certain time period after you join - it's possible that it could go up incrementally the longer you belong (crazy, isn't it?)

We have an LA Fitness nearby that I have thought of checking out a few times, but never have. I'm curious to hear your review.

I have a membership to LA Fitness, admittedly I haven't been there in a while (shame on me), but I preferred it to Lifetime (which I have been a member in the past)

You do not have to pay extra for the classes, Great classes by the way.  And there are no additional fees for lockers etc.  Another thing I like is if you have to "quit" for a while (medical condition, etc) you can put your membership on hiatus and only pay 1/2 the dues.

I have a membership to the Apple Valley location.   Also--I believe you can get a cheaper membership if you choose to only go 1 location.

OK peeps, I made the visit after work tonight.  I was impressed with the facility (clean, plenty of staff, current equipment, huge classroom).  They have classes that fit my schedule (no additional fee) and I spoke to a couple members in the locker room who indicated that the classes aren't jam-packed full-o-people (I had that problem at the old Northwest and the Y).  Cost is more affordable.  After my Medica discount it will be $15.00/month (provided I go 8 times per month).  No long-term contract.  Pay first and last months dues plus registration fee up front.  Personal trainers available for about $40/hour (I think).  The locker room/shower area was spotless.  One drawback is that you don't get a permanent locker and they don't have towel service, , but for the price I'm thinkin that's not a huge deal.  Junior Olympic pool for laps, no water aerobics classess (not for me anyway).  I had them print out a membership agreement for me and I'm going to review it tonight, but it's looking good.

Lifetime must be among the list of Health clubs that charge its members additional usage fees for things like classes, lockers, etc.  That may be offset somewhat for those with employers who give a discount on membership fees, but it can add up to a significant amount over time.  As far as I know, there are no club membership discounts available for the self-employed.
