Does anyone know if it's possible to drive to Rochester without getting on the interstate? |

Sure. US Highway 52 all the way from near the downtown St. Paul Airport. It's 4 lane but not freeway from there.
If you decide to do it have a good trip. |

My husband used to go to Rochester to see his kids. If you are looking for a less traveled route, he suggested taking 77 (from Mpls) to MN Highway 13 South over to US Highway 14 East. The last two roads are two-lane roads, one in each direction. |

Well, literally, you can go almost any where without getting on the freeway -- it will just take longer in most cases. But Don's right, from the Twin Cities, getting on Hwy 52 is the best route to Rochester. You can get on 52 via Hwy 55 (they merge together south of the cities around the Koch Refinery) as well as I94 and I494 (of course that breaks your freeway rule.
Highway 52 is very freeway-like in how it is set up. The speed limit is 60 and it's a four lane divided highway. There are a few places that have entrance and exit ramps and there are a number of places where cars cross the road when the traffic allows. You will also hit two stoplights in Zumbrota.
If you're looking for a scenic 2-lane road, I'm not sure what route you'd take other than starting out going south along 61. |
