Friend of mine has breast cancer and is going through chemo soon. She'll lose her hair and wants a recommendation on best place in Twin Cities to get fitted for a wig. |

The American Cancer Society will give cancer patients one free wig and up to three scarves. They are located in Eagan/Mendota Heights near 494 and PIlot Knob Rd. (2520 Pilog Knob Rd, Ste 150, Mendota Heights -- 651.255.8100.) I would start there. (I got a really nice wig from them.) Informaiton can be found at www.cancer.org -- use the site to find the TWin Cities chapter by enter you ZIP in the box on the right under the top banner -- to get more information.
I haven't gotten another wig -- but I've heard Fantasia Salons is a very good place to go for wigs. Merle Norman also sells wigs. Another place to check is TLC (they're somehow associated with the American Cancer Society -- I think ACS "spun" their wig and prosthetic sales group off into a separate organization.) Their website is www.tlcdirect.org. (The American Cancer Society will give you a catalog for them if you go there for a wig.)
If she is going to buy a wig -- she should check to see if her insurance will cover the cost of a wig (they don't call them wigs -- they call them "necessary cranial prosthesis" and her doctor will need to write that on a prescription.)
I'm just finishing my breast cancer treatment (last chemo was November 11) and I'm a little over 1/3 of the way through radiation. If you friend wants to connect with me with questions or for support, let me know. I'd be happy to meet with her.
Tesstarosa aka Terri
PS I highly recommend that she get the wig taken care of before her hair starts falling out (usually about 2-3 weeks after she starts chemo.) |
