"Monster in the Dumpster" - This has been a rather satisfying day. I helped make a different in the life of a juvenile raccoon today. Now, I've been involved with animals for many years as a Vet assistant & currently as a volunteer with wildlife so naturally everybody calls me when "situations" occur. This morning my friend, having stopped at work, for some unexplained reason checked out the business dumpster. Odd. Peeking over the rim, she was shocked to see a tiny little face peering up at her, making no sounds, just staring up with those big brown eyes. And as with all species, it's a good thing they're so darn cute at "this" age because from the description of the situation, I was sure I would be dumpster diving!
My friend set up some planks for potential escape routes & I provided food & water when I checked on him. Fortunately, with time the little stinker left the dumpster under his own steam & I was lucky enough to be present when he managed to climb up that last wall all by himself.
It's been said by the rehabers many times that we may not be making a lot of difference to the species as a whole but we are making a whole lot of difference to the individual. Personally, if someday I'm that individual, I would hope someone would do the same for me.
