What foods did your parents cook when you were a kid?

Tuesday, June 24, 2008, 03:13 PM CST [General]

We had fun with this one on the show today. What food items do you remember having as a kid? Some of them that we discovered on the air today were:

    Sh*t on a shingle

    Baked Eggs

    Cherries in the Snow

    Hamburger Pie

    Powdered milk

    Pot Roast

    Goulash

Corn Bread, Pinto Beans and Rice

    What else can you add?

    Corned beef hash
    Meatloaf
    Salmon croquettes (read canned salmon)
    Sheppard pie
    Chipped beef on toast
Tom sawyer hotdogs (thawed out in the sink)
    Fried Bologna sandwiches
    Chili-mac
Spaghetti-o’s with cut up hot dogs
Really anything made in bulk…that we could drown in ketchup

Cheese dream sandwiches! I still make them today. It's simply a french toast sandwich with cheese in the middle--add syrup and it's all good.

On Friday nights we wood have bagels and cream cheese with malted malts.

What the heck is sh*t on a shingle?

I don't care how good it is, I'm not eating anything called sh*t on a shingle.

How about boiled chicken and gravy over white bread?

We had any number of things with cut up hotdogs (mac & cheese, spaghetti, Spaghetti-Os, etc.)

Ramen. Ramen, ramen, ramen. Sometimes with an egg mixed in.

A favorite in our broke-ass house was nori sheets cut into quarters, toasted over the stove burner, and wrapped around sticky white rice with soy sauce. We kids thought it was very exotic at the time, but now I just realize it was just cheap filler.
